Carlo Zauli Museum 2020 activity program aimed at the appreciation of all ceramic matter; the protection and dissemination of knowledge about the work of the maestro Carlo Zauli; research into the languages of contemporary art; teaching; and creating networks within the Faenza area.
CARLO ZAULI MUSEUM A PROTAGONIST OF ARTEFIERA WEEKEND
During the Arte Fiera weekend, Bologna is the international epicentre of contemporary art. Beyond the presence of the Fair, in a city dotted with numerous prized initiatives of international importance, our museum is the protagonist of two very prestigious events.
In the institutional exhibition Courtesy Emilia Romagna, curated by historian and art critic Eva Brioschi and representing the very fulcrum of design at Arte Fiera, Carlo Zauli Museum’s presence can be seen across four different works: Primario Lavico by Carlo Zauli, a powerful work from 1985 that feeds off the typical Zaulian dialectic between geometric structure and naturalistic explosion; and the sculptural trilogy The Surface’s Flowing by English artist Daniel Silver, created in 2012 during an artist-in-residence under the curation of Marco Tagliafierro.
At MAMbo, the main project of Art City 2020, one can also find the installation Ossi by Claudia Losi, a monumental piece created in Montelupo Fiorentino by the Tuscany Art Manufactory and produced by the Montelupo Museum of Ceramics Foundation in conjunction with the municipality of Scandicci.
MCZ VISITS AND GUIDED TOURS
Our experience and our stories will make your visit to MCZ a unique and unmatched cultural experience.
It is possible to visit both the CARLO ZAULI COLLECTION and the CONTEMPORARY COLLECTION.
THE CARLO ZAULI TOUR: THE STORY
MCZ has become an incubator for ideas, reflection, and projects of every artist passing through Faenza, and for the ceramics of the master from Faenza himself. In 2020 the cataloguing work continues, in collaboration with IBC, archiving and disseminating the work of Carlo Zauli along with the cataloguing of his works included in the PatER – the Catalog of Emilia-Romagna’s cultural heritage, as well as on the Museum’s website. A major new addition for 2020 will be a summative publication of all the work the Museum has been engaged with over the last three years, both public and private
ARTISTS IN RESIDENCE
The project provides a time for teaching and reflection for students and the general public.
This year, after a thorough survey of Italian artists, the Museum returns to focus on important international personalities: Eva Pelechova, and Urara Tsuchiya, the latter an English artist in residence at the FACC Faenza Art Ceramic Center, who will be a leading participant at an evening event at the Carlo Zauli Museum to meet the public in early March.
CONTEMPORARY CERAMICS – WORKSHOP
The successful workshop project will continue and evolve in 2020 in collaboration with AICC —the Italian Association of Ceramics Cities— with a desire for providing more time for instruction as well as new tools of knowledge and new professional contacts, and expanding the horizons of ceramic experimentation that has characterised the Museum since its very beginnings.
The first stop on this trip will be dedicated to Mediterranean ceramics and its maestros, from Vietri sul Mare to Cutrofiano.
FINAL ITALIAN EXHIBITION OF THE ITALY-CHINA PROJECT “ON THE CERAMICS ROUTE FROM AICC TO FUPING”. WORKSHOP OF ITALIAN CERAMISTS at the FUPING POTTERY ART VILLAGE
The Carlo Zauli Museum will curate the staging of the grand exhibition project dedicated to Italian ceramists who, thanks to this venture, have completed the artist-in-residency course at the Fuping Pottery Art Village, one of the most important centres for ceramics in all of Asia.
This project was made possible thanks to AICC in collaboration with the Fuping Pottery Art Village. 7-8 workshops are planned in China between July 2019 and September 2020, aimed at a total of 30-40 carefully selected Italian ceramists, in particular those from participating Ceramics Cities of the AICC.
COURSE FOR CURATORS, TIED TO THE RESIDENCY PROGRAM RESERVED FOR STUDENTS OF THE ACADEMIES OF FINE ARTS OF BOLOGNA AND RAVENNA
The formative training activity takes place via encounters with curators, directors and communications managers of the museum, invited artists and ceramists.
The course is free of charge; 120 hours of participation in the workshop are required in order to achieve the 6 credit points allocated for its successful completion.
MCZ BOX
The course includes an expansion of the educational-training sector of the Carlo Zauli Museum, which already hosts professional training courses in collaboration with Ecipar, CNA (“Atelier of figures – the crafts of the puppeteer: languages and techniques of puppetry in educational activities and social integration “).
EMPOWERING PEOPLE – THE ART OF INCLUSION.
THE BASIC TECHNIQUE OF CERAMICS AS ART-THERAPY
The project will involve migrant women and will take place at Bologna’s Zonarelli center, which will also host the final event with an exhibit of handicrafts, testimonials and personal experiences of the participants, together with Matteo Zauli and Giovanna Brondino of the RicercAzione co-operative.
DANCE-THERAPY AND ART-THERAPY
It involves a cycle of meetings and workshops, organised by Marinella Freschi and Mona Lisa Tina, in which Carlo Zauli’s works and artistic philosophy will provide the starting point for exploring movement, self-observation, and expressing the potential of our body and its motions, all aimed at using artistic means for improving mental and physical well-being.
MCZ LOCAL
MCZ Summer Pavilion: installation by Marco Ceroni; District A with itinerant dinner; concerts by Strade Blù, Emilia-Romagna Festival and MEI; Ossessioni Festival, Argillà, Wikipoz.
ARGILLÀ 2020

Continuing the run of the last three years we will be leading promoters of various initiatives at our offices and in the city during Argillà 2020, in particular we will be hosting the exhibition project linked to the 2018 Gmunden Symposium, exhibiting the works of the final exhibition presenting artists of international acclaim: Enrica Casentini (Italy), Beate Gatschelhofer (Austria), Jonathan Keep (UK), Helene Kirchmair (Austria), Yara Lettenbichler (Austria), Héléne Loussier (France), Annette Lucks (Germany), Aino Nebel (Germany), Tomasz Niedziólka (Poland), Brigitte Penicaud (France). We will also invite some of the greats of Italian and international ceramics (Sergio Pilastri, painter and ceramist of Montelupo Fiorentino, Eva Pelechová, Prague ceramist, and Claudia Losi, conceptual artist of international calibre). Ceramics workshops and events will be organised in collaboration with the AICC which, in line with the directorship of the national association, will reach many territories in dialogue with ceramic tradition and contemporary experimentation. Furthermore, in a first for Faenza, we will be organising and hosting the Ceramic Performance Festival, an innovative format that links ceramics with the performing arts.
