CERAMICS, SELFIE & CITY:
Memories of Contemporary Art in Italy
workshop with Rolando Giovannini
24/28 august 2015
Through the use of ceramics fired at low temperatures (white, coloured and glazed materials) and photographic images (collected in a reportage manner taken in and around the city by the participants during their stay in Faenza), this course will explore experimental techniques in photoceramics. More than 30 years ago, Rolando Giovannini led pioneering experimentation in the photoceramic techniques. The aim of the course is the realization of small ceramic objects for artistic, functional or exhibition use, using cups, yumoni, tea pots and trays as working bases.
Rolando Giovannini was educated at “Ballardini” of Faenza, graduating with a Magisterium in Technical Ceramics. A Teacher of screen-printing (1972), he was President of the “Ballardini” Institute from 1986 to 2012. He is a geologist and graduated in Decorative Arts at the Academy of Fine Arts in Bologna, with honours. Since 1984, he has been a professor of Decorative Techniques at ISIA and since 2013-14 of Technical Ceramics at the Academy of Verona. He has published books on decorative techniques and design published by “Faenza Editrice” and “Il Sole 24 Ore”. He writes for Ceramic Art and Perception and D’A. He is a co-author of exhibitions at the Centre Georges Pompidou in Paris, Italian Cultural Institute in Tokyo, MIC of Faenza, and created the Museum Confindustria Ceramica in Sassuolo. His works are held at the Victoria and Albert Museum in London, the Municipality of Faenza, the Shin-Kobe Metro Station, Japan Kobe Shinkansen Station, Fuping FuLe International Ceramic Art Museums in China and at the Zibo Museum. He is a member of MI.MA (Milan), IGIIC and NCECA and has worked with B. Munari, G. Dorfles and A. Guerriero. In 2011 he was present at the 54th Venice Biennale at the invitation of Vittorio Sgarbi.
